En la cultura mexicana, a los niños católicos menores de 12 años y mayores de 7 años se acostumbra prepararlos durante 6 meses, con clases de catesismo que se dan en la iglesia, para que aprendan el significado de las oraciones y del Sacramento que van a recibir por primera vez. El niño y la niña son católicos por sus padres, pero ahora ellos ya van a ser católicos por su propia decisión.
Se va a convidar a un padrino hombre para el niño o mujer si es niña. Ellos se instruyen al mismo tiempo que el ahijado, pero por un tiempo más corto.
Para recibir la Primera Comunión, se hace una misa a la que lo acompañan sus padres, abuelitos, y amiguitos. Después de la ceremonia todos se reunen, en un salón o en casa de algún familiar para desayunar tamales, atole y pastel. Sin embargo se puede dar otro tipo de desayuno.
La iglesia y la casa donde se va a
desayunar se adornan en blanco, con flores, cadenas con figuras
de angelitos y palomas y con las tiras de papel o plástico
picado con motivos de Primera comunión.
