Se supone que la tradición actual
de Halloween es una combinación de las costumbres Pre-Colombinas
y Europeas. Muchos elementos de Halloween en los Estados Unidos
de América vinieron de los Celtas y los Romanos. El "Jack
O Lantern" es una costumbre Irlandesa. Originalmente, se
tomaba un nabo, se le esculpía y se le encendía
una vela adentro. De las festividades de las luces de los Celtas
es de donde se cree que se originó el uso de la calabaza.
La luz se ofrecía como sacrificio y también para
iluminar el camino para que regresaran las ánimas a sus
hogares terrenos. Hoy podemos mostrar respeto por las bendiciones
de la tierra utilizando la calabaza no solo para decorar, sino
también para preparar muchas clases de platillos.
Los Romanos también honraban a sus muertos durante esta
estación del año. Ellos introdujeron la manzana
en relación con el Halloween. "Bobbing for apples"
era una forma de asegurar la buena suerte para el año por
venir. En la actualidad, bobbing for apples es un juego del Halloween
para los niños.
Los frutos de la cosecha de estas sociedades
agrícolas, se convirtieron en símbolos de la temporada.
Los conceptos de ofrenda y sacrificio se manifiestan en nuestras
mesas, mantos, y prados. Hoy en día, la calabaza, la mazorca
y las hojas se usan como adorno. Pocas personas están enteradas
de que esta costumbre moderna tiene un origen tan antiguo. En
realidad, estos adornos se pueden considerar como ofrendas.
Este día festivo se celebra también en las calles.
Los niños se disfrazan de espantos, monstruos y personajes
populares y van por la vecindad prometiendo no hacer travesuras
si se les regala un dulce (Trick or Treat).
Halloween Today
It is supposed that the current tradition of Halloween is a combination of the pre-Columbian and European customs. Many elements of Halloween in the United States today came from the Celts and Romans. The Jack o' Lantern from the Irish. a Halloween children's game.
The crops brought in at harvest time in these rural societies
became symbols of the season. The concept of offerings and sacrifices
became evident in our dining room tables, mantles, and yards.
Today, the pumpkin, corn and fall leaves are used as decorations.
Few realize that this modern custom has such an ancient origin.
In reality, these decorations can be considered as offerings.
This day of celebration is taken to the streets too. The children dress up in costumes of ghosts, monsters and popular personalities and go throughout the neighborhood promising not to play a trick if they are offered a treat (Trick or Treat).
