FIESTA DE PRIMAVERA

CONTEXTO

To understand the Battle of Puebla and the significance of el Cinco de
Mayo, it is important to study the sociohistorical context of Mexico around 1862. In short, the European Monarchs were desirous of restoring the empires they had lost in the Americas. While the U.S. was distracted by a civil war, Napoleón III took advantage of Mexico. The pretext was a request by Mexico to forbear a debt payment. The allies of the French in Mexico were the old guard Conservatives in the government and the army. President Benito Juárez went into exile in El Paso del Norte, and Napoleon's puppet emperor of Mexico was an Austrian Archduke recruited for the purpose: Maximiliano. Benito Juárez returned to power after five years of French Intervention when pressures in Europe distracted Napoleón. The Battle of el Cinco de Mayo, at the beginning of the French Intervention, remained aa an incentive to continue the resistence during the five years.
