 Carlene's nephews saw her graduate

The Russian women in the background are paintings from her BFA exhibit.

The mountain in the foreground is in Zuni, New Mexico, near the home of Carlene's parents.

Crowds fight to get on a steamy subway after work. Cars honk and splash water as I wait to cross the street. My hairspray drips into my eyes. They are fixed on the green trees swaying in the cool wind.

Two days after graduation, I left with 30 other BYU students to become interns for two months in what seems like a foreign country. Can't believe I'm in New York City! I feel like the minority here with peoples of all colors speaking languages I've never heard before. It is exhilirating. I hear Russian on the street everyday. I live in a dorm for graduate students called the International House. 75% of the residents are from outside the USA. My neighbors are from Norway, Chile, Bosnia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, and every other country you could think of. They are naturally friendly, knowing what it feels like to be new and out of place.

Though my room is only 8x10 feet, I have everything I need and more. I love it. My window looks out over Riverside park, the Hudson River, and a magnificent church, but I don't spend much time at home. I have two internships. One at the Society of Illustrators and one with an independent illustrator, Geoffrey Moss. I come face to face daily with artwork and illustrators that I have admired over the years. With Mr. Moss, I have been on a photo shoot of Bikers (vroom vroom) as he is creating a book called the "Biker's Bible".

There are stories to be told if you are interested in receiving a 'newsletter' each week to let you know what I'm up to. If not, just let me know. I've been here 3 weeks already and will be here until June 20th for sure. My life is open to any possibility right now, so if I get a job I will stay, if not I'll go elsewhere.

If any of you know of art/ design/ or creative jobs with children anywhere, let me know. Thank you for your support and friendships. I miss you all and invite any visitors to stay with me for $10 a night (includes a cot)!! That is an unbelievable deal for NYC!

With Love, Carlene
