Introduction

This book is a resource to raise public awareness about noxious weeds. A noxious weed is an unwanted plant which interferes with the growth of grass, vegetables and flowers in a given area. A weed is not always unwanted. A noxious weed is one which causes contamination of the soil, sickness to animals, or damage to the environment. Noxious weed growth is an ongoing problem for most areas of the desert southwest. This is very true of the Four Corners area. Management of noxious weed growth continues to be a high-priority research activity. Scientists continue to study noxious weeds and are beginning to understand more about them. This manual is intended to be used as a resource by educators, schools, students, landowners, chapter houses and farm boards. It is hoped that the information in the manual will raise the level of awareness of noxious weeds, their growth, and their impact on the environment.
