Spiny Cocklebur
Asteraceae
(Sunflower Family)
Class B Weed
Why are noxious weeds bad for people?
Noxious weeds keep good plants from growing by eating the food or nutrients in the soil, drinking the water and taking the sunshine.
Each spiny cocklebur plant drinks enough water to grow nine bushels of corn. That is not all. Young cocklebur plants are poisonous and old plants have clusters of burs with hooked barbs that stick in socks and animals fur like Velcro or fish hooks. These annuals grow up to two feet tall.
